Tefillin
Tefillin, also known as phylacteries, is never considered an amulet. Messiah mentions Tefillin in the rebuke towards the scribes and rabbis. The law teachers made an outward show of the tefillin and the tzitzit that attached the four corners of their garment. Yes, these rabbis were obeying the mitzvah (commandments), but the attitude of their hearts and soul became self-seeking!
Mattityahu/Matthew 23:5-7 RSB, Messiah reprimands; “But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries (tefillin) and enlarge the borders (tzitzit) of their garments, and love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues, and greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi.”
Their prayers were also in jeopardy as Messiah exposed the center of their heart and soul.
Matthew 23:14 RSB, Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For ye devour widows’ houses, and for a pretense make long prayer: therefore, ye shall receive the greater judgment.
Matthew 23:28 RSB, Even so, ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.
The wearing of the tefillin is a serious matter. Placing Yahweh’s Word upon our heads and close to our hearts signifies that his Name is Holy. The House of Israel is called to be set apart for his purposes and to walk in his precepts with love and humility. The twelve tribes are the sons of the holy city, lights, and torch-bearers to the world. The wearing of the tefillin places Yahweh’s name upon His people and subjects Israel’s enemies to fear those who do so!
Tefillin is Hebrew, and phylacteries are from ancient Greek, meaning to guard or protect. Tefillin are black leather boxes with leather straps attached to secure them. One tefillin are wrapped on your weakest hand and forearm, locating the box close to the heart. The second tefillin box was placed on the forehead. Tefillin are a great symbol of the laws of our Creator and His strength. Putting these symbols on is a great Mitzvah. Sons of the highest wearing them in unity is a great sign and pleases Yahweh as we surrender our faith. This act provokes Yahweh to protect and reward his people. When we obey his commandments, his promises flow freely. This instruction is written in scripture. The boxes are made of kosher animal hide. Contained within the boxes are Scriptures written on parchment scrolls.

Kadesh LI Hebrew: the duty of the Jewish people to remember the redemption from Egyptian bondage.
Today this history relates to the Messiah’s victory from the bondage of slavery and sin. Our freedom and justification stem from the Lamb’s blood! Remember the Passover. What is contained in the Tefillin boxes are these Scriptures.
Exodus 13:1-10 RSB, And Yahweh spoke unto Moses, saying, Sanctify unto me all the firstborn, whatsoever openeth the womb among the children of Israel, both of man and the beast: it is mine. And Moses said unto the people, Remember this day, in which ye came out from Egypt, out of the house of bondage; for by strength of hand Yahweh brought you out from this place: there shall no leavened bread be eaten. This day came ye out in the month Abib. And it shall be when Yahweh shall bring thee into the land of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, which he swore unto thy fathers to give thee, a land flowing with milk and honey, that thou shalt keep this service in this month. Seven days thou shalt eat unleavened bread, and in the seventh day shall be a feast to Yahweh. Unleavened bread shall be eaten seven days, and no leavened bread shall be seen with thee, neither shall there be leaven seen with thee in all thy quarters. And thou shalt shew thy son that day, saying, this is done because of that which Yahweh did unto me when I came out of Egypt. And it shall be for a sign unto thee upon thine hand, and for a memorial between thine eyes, that Yahweh’s law may be in thy mouth: for with a strong hand hath Yahweh brought thee out of Egypt. Thou shalt therefore keep this ordinance in his season from year to year.
Vehayah Ki Yev’akha Hebrew; the responsibility to inform all children in the family the teaching and instruction.
Exodus 13:11-16 RSB, And it shall be when Yahweh shall bring thee into the land of the Canaanites, as he swore unto thee and to thy fathers, and shall give it thee, that thou shalt set apart unto Yahweh all that opened the matrix (womb), and every firstling that cometh of a beast which thou hast; the males shall be Yahweh’s. And every firstling of a donkey thou shalt redeem with a lamb; and if thou wilt not redeem it, then thou shalt break his neck: and all the firstborn of man among thy children shalt thou redeem. And it shall be when thy son asked thee in time to come, saying, what is this? That thou shalt say unto him, by the strength of hand Yahweh brought us out from Egypt, from the house of bondage: And it came to pass, when Pharaoh would hardly let us go, that Yahweh slew all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both the firstborn of man and the firstborn of the beast: therefore I sacrifice to Yahweh all that opened the matrix, being males; but all the firstborn of my children I redeem. And it shall be for a token upon thine hand, and for frontlets between thine eyes: for by strength of hand Yahweh brought us forth out of Egypt.
The word frontlets are defined in Strong’s Concordance 2903; as going around or binding a fillet on the forehead; this describes the Tefillin worn.
Shema is the pronouncement that Yahweh is one God!
Deuteronomy 6:4-9 RSB, Hear, O Israel: Yahweh, our Elohim, is one Yahweh: And thou shalt love Yahweh thy Elohim with all thine heart and all thy soul, and with all thy might. And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walks’ by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou rises’ up. And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house and gates.
Placing scripture upon the posts and gates of your house is the Mezuzah. Yahweh is Elohim, canceling all false gods and idols.
Ve-haya Im Shamoa Hebrew; God’s assurance of reward for observance of the Torah’s precepts and warning of retribution for disobedience.
Deuteronomy 11:13-21 RSB, And it shall come to pass if ye shall hearken diligently unto my commandments which I command you this day, to love Yahweh your Elohim, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul, That I will give you the rain of your land in his due season, the first rain and the latter rain, that thou mayest gather in thy corn, and thy wine, and thine oil. And I will send grass in thy fields for thy cattle, that thou mayest eat and be full. Take heed to yourselves, that your heart be not deceived, and ye turn aside and serve other mighty ones, and worship them; And then Yahweh’s wrath be kindled against you, and he shut up the heaven, that there be no rain, and that the land yield, not her fruit; and lest ye perish quickly from off the good land which Yahweh giveth you. Therefore, shall ye lay up these my words in your heart and in your soul, and bind them for a sign upon your hand, that they may be as frontlets between your eyes. And ye shall teach them your children, speaking of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walks by the way when thou liest down, and when thou rises up. And thou shalt write them upon the door posts of thine house, and upon thy gates: That your days may be multiplied, and the days of your children, in the land which Yahweh swore unto your fathers to give them, as the days of heaven upon the earth.
As you study these commands and practice your faith, these rewards are obtainable to believers! I am not saying that non-Jews must practice donning Tefillin, but I will say nowhere in Scripture prohibits any believer from observing this command in faith. The Holy Spirit is no respecter of persons.
In practicing and believing our Creator’s Holy Word, we begin to see the awesome results. 2 Kings 5:1-27 records a great story of obedience that resulted in reward. Sometimes we put off and question what we do because of how we look; donning tefillin is a good example.
Let’s summarize the story in 2 Kings Chapter 5. This is the story of Naaman, a commander of the army of the King of Syria. He was a mighty and brave man but had a skin disease. Naaman sought to be cured of leprosy and sought out a true prophet of Israel. Naaman takes seven hundred pounds of silver, one hundred fifty pounds of gold, and ten changes of clothes. Naaman makes his way to Elisha, a prophet of Israel, and arrives at his house. Elisha does not meet with Naaman himself but sends a messenger to him with instructions; “Go and wash in the River Jordan seven times, then your skin will be healed, and you will be cleaned.” Naaman was angry. He expected Elisha to wave his hand in the name of Yahweh, and he would be healed. The question of obedience is in play, no matter how it looks. Naaman said the waters in Damascus are more worthy than the Rivers in Israel. The servants of Naaman reasoned with him and said, “if the prophet told you to do something great, wouldn’t you have done it? It makes more sense to wash, and you will be clean.” So Naaman dipped seven times in the River Jordan, just like Elisha instructed. Naaman’s skin became new again, like a child’s skin, and he was clean. Naaman returned to Elisha and said, “there is no God in all the Earth except in Israel. Now please accept gifts from me,” and Elisha, the true prophet of Yahweh, refused.
Matthew 10:8-10 NCV – Messiah speaking; “Heal the sick, raise the dead to life again, heal those with skin diseases, and force demons out of people. I give you these powers freely so you help other people freely. Don’t carry any money with you-gold or silver or copper. Don’t carry a bag of extra clothes or sandals or a walking stick. Workers should be given what they need.”
Elisha and all the true prophets of Yahweh understood. Like many today, Balaam, a false prophet, was misunderstood for taking gifts for-profit and acquiring material wealth.
2 Peter 2:15, Which have forsaken the right way, and are gone astray, following the way of Balaam, the son of Bosor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness.
Origin of Tefillin
The Torah tells us in four passages to don Tefillin. These specific passages refer to the Mitzvah and how they are connected. Deuteronomy 6:8 And you shall bind them as a sign on your arm, and they shall be as frontlets on your head between your eyes. This instruction also appears in Exodus 13:1-10, Exodus 13:11-16, and Deut. 6:4-9, and Deut. 11:13-21. These four passages refer to Yahweh, His miracles and power in the physical world, spiritual realm, and beyond our understanding.
What exactly goes on when you don a Tefillin?
Donning tefillin is remembering His strength. Referring to the head, tefillin is positioned close to the brain and all our senses, keeping His Words close to our mind, letting them guide us. Tefillin around the hand is to remember His strong arm, leading us out of Egypt. Egypt was a place of bondage, serving rulers with pagan gods, a place of sin and hardship. By donning Tefillin, we connect outwardly, by the heart (box is placed near the heart), by the mind (box placed on forehead) and by the body. The Leather strap is bound around arm and hand with specific orientation according to tribe. This outward action is our reminder of how we stay connected Spirit, Soul and Body. This is our rehearsal, allowing the Ruach HaKodesh to guide our intellect, motivation of our heart along with our physical body, all flowing in harmony as the Holy Spirt prompts.
When do we don Tefillin?
Donning tefillin is customarily part of Morning Prayer, only during the daytime, never at night. Tefillin is never worn on Shabbat. Shabbat and holidays are considered to be signs between Yahweh and us. Therefore, tefillin are not worn on these occasions. Sephardic Jews, Chassidim, and certain non-Chassidic segments of Ashkenazi Jews do not don Tefillin on Chol Hamoed. These are the intermediate days between Passover and the Feast of Tabernacles. Most Ashkenazis, however, do don Tefillin on Chol Hamoed. James 4:12 RSB. There is one lawgiver who is able to save and destroy: who art thou that judges another? This Scripture declares the Messiah is the lawgiver. Yahushua Yahweh, appearing in human flesh, was born from a virgin, crucified, and raised from the dead. Making a covenant with the House of Israel and then reaching out to the nations of the world. Isaiah 33:22 RSB, For Yahweh, is our judge, Yahweh is our lawgiver, Yahweh is our king; he will save us.
Unity resulted in a Miracle
The next pages reveal a factual account, Israel as a Nation sparsely wore the Tefillin. They were encouraged to don the Tefillin and pray in unity as a people when their enemies planned a hostile attack.
The Six-Day War and Tefillin 1967
1. Egypt amasses 100,000 troops, 1,000 tanks, and 900 heavy guns into the Sinai Desert with the support of Russia.
2. Egypt signs a pact with Syria to the north and Jordan to the east, intention to tighten a noose on Israel.
3. On May 23, 1967, Egypt closed the straits of Tiran, invoking an act of War against the Jewish State and cutting Israeli shipping.
4. Alliance of the three nations vocalizes, “We shall slaughter you, we shall wipe you out, kill the Jews, wipe out Israel.”
5. May 28, 1967, Brooklyn, N.Y. Elder Statesman and Spiritual Leader Menachem Mendel Schneerson* known as Rebbe, delivers an uplifting message. He inspires Jews to study the Torah and show love to their fellow man. God of Israel will defend you, and Hashem will be your God.
7. On June 5, 1967, 183 Israeli airplanes attacked air bases across Egypt, Egyptian Air Force was destroyed. IDF destroyed 800 tanks, 80% of Egypt’s military equipment was lost in the Sinai Desert, and thousands of soldiers were taken as prisoners. All this within 48 hours.
8. June 6-10, 1967. Western Wall liberated, Hebron Hills captured, Jordan Army relinquished control, Syrian defenses at Golan Heights collapsed, withdrew eastward with great panic in total chaos, and ran from the battle before IDF were in the vicinity.
9. June 10, 1967, Cease fire is in effect; Israel successfully defends its territory and captures Jerusalem in the process. Israel conquered three times its size, being outgunned and outnumbered. The world is in awe of this great victory all in six days!
* Rebbe duties differ from a Rabbi. M. M. Schneerson, a Rebbe, who is deceased, is not the Messiah as some Jewish followers assumed.
A short documentary is featured below from www.chabad.org/tefillin… YouTube, ‘Six Day War and Tefillin.’
Did wearing the Tefillin alter and guarantee success as the war was fought? Absolutely! Walking in faith, believing in the prayers of a Nation unified in solidarity, and seeking the promises of the covenant made with the Jewish forefathers is indisputable. Our Father in Heaven always comes through and watches over His Word to perform it.
Wearing the Tefillin may look peculiar, but this obedience won a war!
Ezekiel 36:1-2 RSB, Also, thou son of man, prophesy unto the mountains of Israel, and say, Ye mountains of Israel, hear the word of Yahweh: Thus saith my Sovereign Yahweh; because the enemy hath said against you, Aha, even the ancient high places are ours in possession:
Manmade borders were made obsolete overnight! On June 7th, 1967, Jerusalem, the Temple Mount, and the Western Wall, sacred of all High places, were placed back into Israeli hands by Yahweh Himself! Sinai War 1967.
